Practitioners among the various New Thought denominations Religious Science, Divine Science and Unity may also refer to this form of prayer by such names as "scientific prayer," "spiritual mind treatment" or simply, "treatment.”
"Affirmative Prayer is a metaphysical technique that is focused on a positive outcome rather than a negative situation. For example, a person who is experiencing some form of illness would focus the prayer on the desired state of perfect health and affirm this desired intention "as if it had already happened" rather than identifying the illness and then asking God for help to eliminate it. New Thought spirituality originated during the 1880s and has emphasized affirmative prayer as an essential part of its philosophy. Practitioners among the various New Thought denominations Religious Science, Divine Science and Unity may also refer to this form of prayer by such names as "scientific prayer," "spiritual mind treatment" or, simply, "treatment.” Within New Thought organizations, centers and churches, the foundational logic of this form of prayer is based on the belief that God is unlimited and plays no favorites, that God has created spiritual laws that are both as mysterious and as constant as scientific principles like gravity, and thus, if one's prayer is correctly and diligently focused, it will be answered consistently.
William James described affirmative prayer as an element of the American metaphysical healing movement that he called the "mind-cure;” he described it as America's "only decidedly original contribution to the systemic philosophy of life.” What sets affirmative prayer apart from secular affirmations is that affirmative prayer addresses the practitioner to God, the Divine, the Creative Mind, emphasizing the seemingly practical aspects of religious belief. Some members of the self-help and self-improvement movements advocate affirmative prayer in addition to or instead of secular affirmations. The choice is largely an individual one, based on the beliefs of the one using the practice.
During the process of a Spiritual Mind Treatment, also known as Affirmative Prayer, we come to the realization that within the universe there is one infinite, universal presence that permeates everything, and therefore this presence, being everywhere, has to be right within us as well. With this attitude of mind, we reach an acceptance of new possibilities in life, we are able to see, feel and speak of the good we desire as already ours. Then we let the universe work its magic. Another way of thinking about Spiritual Mind Treatment is that by using this type of prayer you are reprograming your own subconscious mind.
Step one: We acknowledge that within the universe there is one pervading presence, one force encompassing everything that is in existence, one energy from which all things are made. Many people throughout the ages have called this source of all things, God. The name is not important, what matters is that we recognize this truth.
Step two: Having recognized the magnificence and awesome power of the one presence that is absolutely everywhere within the universe, we realize that this same intelligence that created everything, does not stop being where we are. Therefore it is within us; it is the substance that life is made of. In this step we become aware of who we really are: Divine beings made of the one energy and having a human experience.
Step three: We name our desire(s) with the feeling that as we do this, it is already ours. We are moving away from the feeling of ‘wanting’ to the feeling of ‘having’ already received.
Step four: We summon, from within ourselves, a feeling of gratitude. Of course, the source of all that is, does not need our gratitude to function; it is rather that an attitude of gratitude opens our consciousness to receiving even more good. As the law of the universe is such that what we focus on is what we manifest in our experience, when we are focused on the good that we already have, then we can only attract more good.
Step five: Once we have accomplished the four previous steps, all we need to do is trust. We release it to the wisdom and the love of the universe. The creator does not require our input on ‘how’ our desire is manifesting itself for us."
